Copy Editing Projects

Starbucks Summary Plan Description:

200-page book for Starbucks employees. Several writers contributed to the project, requiring heavy editing to ensure consistency of tone and usage. At layout stage, edited for format. Design required the use of many styles and point sizes of heads and subheads, and several different styles of bulleted lists. Made sure all were accurate and consistent. Also assisted with index.

The Fund Newsletter:

Fireman's Fund's employee newsletter. Copyedited six issues. At Microsoft Word stage, made sure all writers had consistent usage and styles inkeeping with the conversational tone of the newsletter. Checked facts and accuracy of captions. Edited for space and format at layout stage. Proofread color proofs. Successfully lobbied for The Fund to adopt the serial comma.

Sutter Health Progress Newsletter:

A quarterly newsletter to educate employees at various Sutter Health affiliates about how their retirement options were changing. Four versions of the newsletter were printed to accommodate groups of affiliates, each with different retirement plans and unions. Checked for accuracy in the details of each retirement plan, and made sure the right one was discussed in each edition of the newsletter. Copyedited four versions of four editions from Microsoft Word stage to printer-ready proofs.

Zabit and Associates Style Guide:

Before Z&A was acquired to become part of Xceed, I researched, designed, and wrote the company style guide to promote consistency among the writers and project managers. For in-depth answers I encouraged people to refer to the Chicago Manual of Style or the AP Stylebook, but I wanted to provide a close-at-hand reference for the more common gaffes. So I compiled them in a humorous 30-page book that is still in use today.
